Man from Fruitvale arrested for pointing banana at police officers, including one named Bunch
Nathen Channing, a 27-year-old resident of Fruitvale, Colorado, was taken into custody on Sunday night for pointing a banana at a pair of Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies, both of whom initially believed the piece of fruit was a handgun.
The two involved Mesa County deputies were identified as Joshua Bunch and Donald Love, both of whom were identified as victims in the case against Channing, who was arrested on two counts of felony menacing.
In an arrest affidavit, Bunch wrote that he was driving in unincorporated Mesa County, when he noticed Channing walking on the sidewalk.
Eventually, Bunch wrote, Channing “reached into the left side of his coat and pulled out a yellow object, pointing it into the air then in my direction as I approached him.” “Fearing it was a weapon,” Bunch wrote that he sped off. And knowing Love was travelling behind him, Bunch said he radioed his fellow deputy to warn him. As he returned to the area, Bunch wrote he witnessed Channing point the same object at Love. As Love got out of his vehicle and approached Channing, Bunch wrote his fellow deputy said he “observed what appeared to be a yellow tube with a black centre” and also stated he 'thought it was a gun.' “Deputy Love stated he was in fear for his life at this point and was in the process of pulling out his handgun when Nathen yelled, ‘It’s a banana!’” Bunch wrote.
In describing his own misinterpretation of the object, Bunch wrote that “based on training and experience, I have seen handguns in many shapes and colours and perceived this to be a handgun.” After identifying the object as harmless, the two deputies approached Channing, asking him to explain his actions. “Nathen stated he does a lot of ‘YouTube’ and thought it would be a ‘funny joke,’” Bunch wrote. “Nathen explained he did it to a friend who was also driving in the area and his friend thought it was funny.” Noticing no cameras in the area, Bunch wrote that he pressed Channing for details about whether he was going to post video of the incident on YouTube. At that point Channing admitted this was a “‘trial run’ of the joke,” and that he was not recording it.
“Nathen’s only explanation for pointing the banana at law enforcement was it was a joke,” Bunch wrote. “He thought it would, ‘lighten the holiday spirit.’” When Bunch explained that to Channing that he wasn’t laughing, and that “these matters are taken very seriously,” Channing apologised for the incident and admitted he “may have taken the joke too far.” Apparently deeming his apology as insufficient after discussing the incident further, the deputies placed Channing under arrest, with Bunch writing “Nathen, by physical action, knowingly placed Deputy Love and I in imminent fear by use of an article fashioned in the manner to cause us to reasonably believe it was a deadly weapon.” If convicted of the charges detailed in his arrest affidavit, Channing could receive one to three years in prison and a fine of between $1,000 and $100,000.

Woman arrested over $6,400 sausage heist
A Texas woman has lost her job and now is facing criminal charges for allegedly stealing $6,400 worth of sausage from her employer, the Kiolbassa Provision Company.
An arrest affidavit stated that a representative of the company notified San Antonio police that Regina Shaw, 45, had been caught on surveillance cameras on Sept. 14, taking a pallet of products out of the business without permission.
The affidavit stated that the stolen sausage was valued at more than $6,400. It stated that the company representative also presented police with a written statement from a man who said Shaw had sold him some of the stolen sausage on one occasion, then gave him more later to repay a debt she owed to him.
Police later spoke with that man and showed him Shaw's picture in a photo lineup. They said he identified her as the unauthorized sausage seller. Shaw was arrested on Tuesday on a charge of theft.

Man vexed that ATMs rejected his bank card smashed-up nine machines in hammer attack
Chinese man Bo Teng has been arrested after he took a hammer out of his car and used it to smash up nine ATM machines when they refused to accept his bank card.
The tourist had been visiting the city of Guangzhou in China's Guangdong province and needed the money to get a hotel for the night.
But after repeatedly putting the card in and having it rejected, the 43-year-old walked away briefly only to return minutes later with a hammer from his car. He then used it to smash up the machine that had rejected his card, and then also attack three other machines in the wall of the bank.

He then walked a short distance until he spotted another bank, with another five ATM machines, and smashed those up as well. Police spokesman Jun Li said: "He was furious that he couldn't get money from his account but it appears it was because he didn't have any money in his account.
"It was also foolish given that he had tried to use the machine a few minutes earlier, and it was easy to identify him from his card details." The bank warned that the man is unlikely to have any money in his account for some time after they announced they were suing him for the cost of repairing the machines, which is expected to be over 20,000. They are also filing a complaint for criminal damage with police.

A clothing store in Beijing has caused an outcry after putting up a sign banning Chinese customers.
The sign reading: "Chinese not admitted - staff excluded" appeared more than a week ago.
"We didn't want to hang up the sign in the first place and lead people to think we Chinese look down upon ourselves. But some Chinese customers are too annoying," a salesperson said, adding that the wholesale store mainly sells to foreigners. The salesperson said the store had to pay a foreign customer £3,200 ($5,000) last week to settle the theft of his wallet by a Chinese shopper.
"The surveillance camera footage showed a Chinese customer stole his wallet. But the foreign customer claimed that we [the shop and the Chinese customer] are a group of thieves. And Chinese women often try on lots of clothes but end up buying nothing," the salesperson added.

Tenant won almost $1,000 compensation after suing landlord over cracked toilet seat
A man who sued because of a faulty toilet seat has been awarded almost $1,000 compensation by a tribunal in Australia.
In claims to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Riley Nottingham alleged the toilet seat at the one-bedroom rental property in the Kensington suburb of Melbourne was so badly cracked it cut skin and drew blood.
Mr Nottingham, 23, said he was so embarrassed by the loo he asked some visitors to use a nearby public toilet. “I couldn’t have girls over,” he says. “We had to put wads of paper over the crack, it was a pain. It wasn’t a life-or-death problem, but when you’re paying good rent, it gets to you.” A replacement seat fitted after more than a dozen emails and a complaint to Consumer Affairs Victoria offered no relief: it was too small for the designer porcelain bowl.
So Mr Nottingham launched a tribunal action. VCAT member Jessica Klingender found in his favour, noting the problems “made the daily requirement of sitting on the toilet inconvenient, uncomfortable, potentially painful and unhygienic”. She wrote in her decision: “A toilet is a necessity. While I accept that the landlords did make some efforts ... the tenant was without a properly functioning toilet seat for a period of some months.”

VCAT ordered Malaysian landlords Kim Wah Yong and Heng Lai Liu to pay $933.57. However, Mr Nottingham is unable to register the debt with the Magistrates’ Court because he can’t find an Australian address for the landlords. “I’ve got the order, but I can’t enforce it. It seems ridiculous,” he said. Mr Nottingham has since moved in with a friend in Yarraville and is yet to receive the payout.

Road gritters have been blessed by clergy including the Bishop of Lincoln as part of preparations to make Lincolnshire's roads safer this winter.
All 43 of Lincolnshire's gritters were blessed by various clergy at the county's eight depots. It is the latest unusual blessing for the Right Reverend Christopher Lowson, who has also blessed church toilets. "Gritters and toilets are really important parts of our lives," he said.
The Right Reverend Lowson said: "Toilets is probably the strangest thing [I've blessed] but it's actually making the point that God is not just interested in what you might think of as holy stuff, but the whole of life."
Talking about the first time he blessed toilets, he said: "As we finished, the toilet flushed and this rather embarrassed man came out of it with the congregation standing with the bishop in the middle of them. So the toilet was blessed in several ways really."

Sheep farmer proposed to girlfriend with help from his flock
A resourceful sheep farmer from Willingdon in East Sussex found an interesting way to propose to his girlfriend.
Henry Brown, 34, surprised his girlfriend Emily Walker, 22, from Hailsham, by proposing with a helping hand from his flock.
“We both work in the sheep farming sector, it felt an apt way to propose,” said Henry, who farms 450 lambing ewes.
“You’ve got to make a bit of effort with these things, you only do it the once. I just thought I would make it a bit of fun really.” He said he planned the proposal in advance, and wanted to make sure it was imaginative. “We both had the day off so I said shall we go for a ride around the farm,” said Henry.
Earlier, he had got five of his flock, sprayed them with ‘Emily, will ewe marry me?’, and put them out in a separate field. When the pair spotted the sheep in the wrong place on their morning ride, they went out to investigate. Emily said, “I did not have a clue, I did not expect it at all.
“I was really surprised. I walked up and saw the sheep and thought hold on what’s going on. Then I realised what they had got written on them. He then did the gentlemanly thing and got down on one knee.” Emily said yes, and now the pair, who have been together since May, have set the wedding date for June 27 next year.

Police release CCTV image of man they want to speak to in connection with burglary
Police have released a CCTV image of a burglar who climbed onto the counter of a service station.
Humberside Police are appealing for witnesses and releasing the of a man they want to speak to in connection with a burglary at the Oasis service station in Long Riston which took place between 3.00am and 3.15am on Monday 3 November 2014.
Although the image does not show the suspect’s face it does show that he was wearing a distinctive top and trainers and police are appealing for people to look at the top and shoes and help identify the person wearing them.
Anyone who may be able to identify the individual is asked to contact them.
