Elderly driver sped through car wash at 40mph

An elderly driver in California may have set a record for fastest car wash ever.

The 94-year-old man was caught on camera speeding through the Quick Quack Car Wash in Sacramento at an estimated 40 miles per hour last Friday.

The man paid for his car wash, but then claimed he confused the brake and accelerator pedals.

Workers rushed out to try and stop him, but the car crashed through the equipment, causing an estimated $100,000 worth of damage. No one was injured and the man walked away without a scratch.

Would-be store robber decided not to proceed after recognising clerk

An attempted robbery suspect changed his mind after he recognised the clerk at the Colorado convenience store he walked into.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the masked man, wearing a hoodie, walked into a Quick Save convenience store in Wheat Ridge at noon on Tuesday. The store clerk said the suspect looked at him and said, "(Expletive), I was going to rob this place but I know you."

The suspect then asked the clerk, "Do you know me?" When the clerk replied he did not recognise the man, the suspect said, "Good" and walked out of the store while giving a "thumbs up" sign to the clerk. The suspect left in an older, 1990s, full-size, grey or silver four-door sedan.

It has dark purple tinted windows and no visible licence plates. He was wearing a blue hoodie jacket, blue bandana, blue jeans, and red and yellow shoes. He had the bandana over the lower half of his face and the hoodie pulled over his head. Shortly after the attempted robbery at the Quick Save, a 7-Eleven was robbed by a man fitting the same description. Colorado police were still searching for the suspect.

Woman stole TV by hiding it under her dress

Police are hunting a female shoplifter who was caught on camera stuffing a boxed plasma TV up her dress before strolling out the store. CCTV footage caught the thief strolling into the open showroom in the town of Guapiles in central Costa Rica, as a female friend looked on.

After quickly checking for security, she picked up the plasma TV, straddled the box, straightened her dress, then walked off with it wedged firmly between her thighs. Shop assistant Jacint Ramirez Callas, 25, said: "She did it so quickly no one had time to notice or react.

"And having watched the video it is amazing that the TV doesn’t fall out from between her legs. She must be a pro or have very thick thighs. She left as if she didn't have a care in the world. I’ve never seen anything like it." Now police have appealed to the public for help in catching the thief by releasing the video of snatch and grab.

A spokesman for the police said: "We believe this woman has had a lot of experience of doing this as it only took her 13 seconds from start to finish. Either she has been practising at home or has carried out similar thefts and we appeal to anybody who might know more to get in touch." Police have asked anyone who may recognise the women involved to contact them.

Homeless cat praised for saving abandoned baby

A baby boy no older than 12 weeks has been found in a box on a staircase in an apartment block in the Russian town of Obninsk. The box was meant for a cat, who then warmed up the baby. The baby in the cat box was discovered by one of the neighbours, who had heard what she thought to be loud meowing and rushed to rescue the cat from possible offenders. The feline has been living in the apartment block for three years, fed and petted by its residents.

The day she found an unexpected guest in her box was a freezing one, but the baby was very warm, according to the woman, who first discovered the abandoned boy. "She has been keeping the baby warm for several hours and meowing to call for help," she said. The woman, who turned to be a nurse, said she also found a bag with baby food and nappies. The boy was well and tidily dressed, she added. But it was the baby's new furry carer who was worried about the boy even after police and medics arrived.

She kept close to the baby and didn't want to let it go, the woman said. "When an ambulance worker took the baby to bring him into the car, the cat followed him and pitifully meowed," she said, adding that the four-pawed adoptive mother tried to jump into the ambulance to follow the boy. The cat then sat for hours on the road by the house waiting for the car to return and bring him back, neighbours said. The baby boy was taken to a hospital in Obninsk, some 60 miles from the Russian capital.

Doctors said the boy, who might be from six to 12 weeks old, is completely healthy and feeling well. "We have received a lot of feedback from sympathising residents, who are willing to help and ask if any food, toys and other things are needed," a paediatric nurse said. The police are now trying to identify the baby and are searching for his parents, while the cat, who looks to be expecting herself, is receiving extra care and treated like a hero by the residents.

Teenager stole sex toy because he was too embarrassed to buy it

A teenager has been fined after he stole a sex toy from a Tesco store because he was too embarrassed to buy it in front of female cashiers. Bradley Cooper, 19, stole the £4.50 Durex Little Devil Vibrator but was caught when a security guard spotted him.

He was stopped trying to leave the store in Cannock, Staffordshire, on December 6 and police were called after he attempted to run off. He admitted theft at Cannock Magistrates’ Court and was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The court heard Cooper, of Cannock, picked up the sex toy, along with a bottle of Lucozade and a cake. But when he approached the cashiers he realised all of them were women and was too ashamed to buy it so stole it instead.

Prosecutor Zoe Speake said: "When Mr Cooper was stopped at the exit of the store he ran off across the car park." Serena Joshi, defending, said: "Mr Cooper had the money for the item but was simply too embarrassed to pay for it."

Man tried to have sex with postbox in middle of shopping arcade

A man from Wigan in Greater Manchester was caught trying to have sex with a shopping arcade postbox. Paul Bennett was spotted by a female witness performing the lewd and bizarre act in Scholes Precinct, Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court heard. Bennett, of Holborn Avenue, Worsley Mesnes, pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent exposure and using threatening and abusive words with abusive behaviour.

Katie Beattie, prosecuting, told the court that on September 9 last year the complainant heard shouting and swearing outside her window. The witness saw the drunken 45-year-old defendant arguing with a woman. After the woman left, Bennett lay down on a bench in the precinct and started to shout. The court was told he sat up and the witness saw him expose himself and pull his trousers down. He then began performing a sex act and walked over to the postbox and “started to make sexual advances towards it.”

The court was told the worker then witnessed Bennett rubbing up against the postbox with his trousers down before walking away. The defendant’s arms were raised in a star position, he was continuing to expose himself and he was shouting “wow”. Ms Beattie said: “The victim was alarmed by his behaviour.” Bennett pulled his pants up then swung on a lamppost before looking at a reflection of himself in a window. Ms Beattie added: “The victim rang the police. She was disgusted by his behaviour.” Bennett was found by police officers at the front of a shop in the precinct where he was still exposing himself.

The court heard Bennett became agitated and clenched his teeth as he shouted and swore at the officers. A statement read by the prosecution described the defendant as drunk. Defending Martin Jones said: “The lady watched for sometime and was ashamed, disgusted and upset and my client accepts that. Clearly there are issues that need to be addressed.” Bennett was handed a 12-month community order with an alcohol treatment and supervision requirement. He was also ordered to pay £50 compensation to the victim, £150 court costs and £60 victim surcharge. Bennett was also notified to sign the Sex Offenders Register.
