Father of 12-year-old who tried to rob store with loaded gun says she did it to try and save her home

The father of a 12-year-old Michigan girl who tried to rob a store over the weekend says she did it because she thought she could save her house. “She’s always been a very good and caring child,” said her father. “That’s a girl that just turned 12-yrs-old here last month,” he said.

Police say the 12-year-old covered her face and then walked into the Country Lake Store near her home, pointed a loaded handgun at an employee and demanded money. She was disarmed by an employee and cried while police were called.

“Momma told me she did it because she was trying to get money to pay off her house because I was taking the house away, which is totally untrue,” he said.He has been separated from his daughter’s mother since April when he filed for divorce after nine years. It has been a bitter battle. They declared bankruptcy three years ago. “There’s no excuse for what she did, but, it shows that she cares,” said her father.

His estranged wife who has custody of their two daughters lives on the same road. He says his 12-year-old was left home alone over the weekend when she stole the gun she used in the attempted robbery from his next door neighbour. He says she’s just a young girl caught up in the fact that her parents are going through tough times. The girl is being held in juvenile detention until a hearing on April 26th.

There's a news video with the father talking about the incident here.

Her heart may have been in the right place, but her mind is also in a criminal place, since she also had to steal the gun before committing the hold-up.

Keep an eye on that one...
