Doctor rams car into closed liquor store for beer

One driver in Massachusetts wasn't going to let a closed liquor store stop him from trying to get a drink. Police said Dr. Joseph Grillo intentionally drove into a liquor store in Seekonk last week.

Security cameras caught the doctor trying to grab a beer, but it was out of his reach. The doctor gave up and got back into his car. But he snagged a cigarette display under his car, which began to spark as he drove away. That's when he was caught by police.

"When he got out of the car, you could see him stumble a bit and he was eyeing the beers that we have on the counter, so he comes around and he tried to stick his hand in to reach for the beers and he's not even close," said store clerk Elizabeth Reed.

"I feel very badly about what happened and plan to take suitable action," said Grillo. The store owner joked that his store was chosen because he has such an extensive inventory.

Man shot dead in Latvian cinema for eating popcorn too loudly

A man was shot dead at a Latvian cinema after eating his popcorn too loudly during a screen of Black Swan.

Police said they had arrested a 27-year-old man suspected of shooting a 42-year-old fellow audience member who later died of his wounds. The conflict took place as the credits rolled during a screen of the Oscar-nominated film "Black Swan", according to police in the Baltic state.

Witnesses said that it arose over how loudly the deceased man was eating his popcorn. Gun-crime is relatively rare in Latvia, a European Union nation of 2.2 million.

The shooting occurred on Saturday evening in the central multiplex cinema in the Latvian capital, Riga, at the end of the psychological thriller about a ballet dancer who loses her mind succumbing to pressure to perform.

Danish festival to hold 'Piss-Off' seminar

While urine may be easily disposed of on an individual basis, collectively it is a big headache for organisers of outdoor summer music festivals and other major events.

So now they're trying to do something about it. The organisers of Denmark's largest festival, the Roskilde Festival, which attracts 75,000 people, have arranged a seminar addressing how to encourage guests to use toilets.

Titled "Backstage: Piss-Off", the seminar starts on March 3 in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District. The organisers are confident that the seminar will come up with some good ideas; however, one solution has already been proposed for this year's Roskilde Festival.

“We're preparing female urinals and other alternative solutions for women,” project coordinator Signe Brink said. “We're also looking at ways of encouraging people not to urinate on the fences.”

Men reach for sacred wood at 'Naked Festival'

About 9,000 men dressed in nothing but white "fundoshi" (loin cloths) gathered on Saturday night in the city of Okayama for an offbeat competition to chase after two sacred sticks thrown by a monk.

The men who manage to snatch the wood and leave with it from Saidaiji Temple in Higashi Ward are recognized as the "lucky men" of the year.

The Saidaiji Eyo competition, also known as the "Naked Festival," is widely recognized as one of the "three oddest festivals" in the nation. It dates back to the Muromachi Period (1388-1573), with this year's rendition being the 502nd.

According to legend, the festival started after monks noticed that too many people were chasing after its amulet bills and decided to just throw some into the crowds.

Romanian con man found working as TV anchor

Con man Viorel Plescan has finally been arrested after a decade on the run despite becoming a well-known face after getting a job as a TV show anchorman.

Plescan, 35, went on the run in 2001 and managed to escape capture by getting married abroad, and then adopting his wife's name to become Viorel Andrei.

He was arrested when Romanian police investigating a minor traffic offence linked Viorel Andrei to the on-the-run Viorel Plescan - and discovered to their amazement he was the anchorman on a prime time TV programme.

He was wanted by police in Galati over cheque fraud but fled to Piatra-Neamt, a town 250km away. He must now serve eight years in jail for the conviction he got in 2001. In addition, police are now investigating him for using a false identity.

Cat purrs as loud as Boeing 737

Pet cat Smokey is believed to have the loudest purr in the world - with piercing purrs as loud as a lawnmower. Most cats purr at around 25 decibels but Smokey's powerful purrs average an amazing 80 decibels.

When measured close-up her purrs reach an incredible 92 decibels, equivalent to the noise of a Boeing 737 coming into land.

Owners Ruth and Mark Adams say Smokey's deafening purrs make it impossible for them to hear the television or radio when she is in the room and they struggle to have telephone conversations. "She has always been very vocal and purrs at some level nearly all the time," said Ruth, from Pitsford, Northampton.

"She even manages to purr while she eats. The only time she is quiet is when she is asleep. When I'm on the phone friends often ask what the loud noise is and they can't believe it is coming from a cat."

Man cut boy's penis with plastic loyalty card

A man who cut a child's genitals with a broken supermarket loyalty card in a bungled attempt to reduce swelling has been sentenced to 18 months probation. Ross McBride, 23, from Clydebank, took the action after accidentally kicking the boy while playing with a football at a house in Glasgow in February 2008.

The toddler needed 11 stitches to repair the damage he caused but has since made a satisfactory recovery. McBride, who is autistic, admitted using culpable and reckless conduct. Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how McBride was in a bad mood when the incident happened because his girlfriend had not bought him a Valentine's card.

He was kicking the ball hard out of frustration when he missed and caught the toddler instead. When he noticed that the child's penis was red and swollen, McBride decided to snap a shop loyalty card and compress it around the injured area. When that failed he then tried to saw at the youngster in a failed attempt to reduce the swelling.

The court heard that when the boy's mother arrived back the accused told her what had happened and she took her son to hospital. The youngster was examined by doctors and a police child examiner and was found to have bruising, swelling and cuts to his genitals and thighs. He was operated on and received 10 stitches to one wound and one to another but has since made a satisfactory recovery.

Packet of rice contained congealed meat

A diner has told of his horror after he opened a packet of microwaveable rice and discovered it contained congealed meat.

Shocked Noel Briscoe, 70, had heated up the packet of egg fried rice to accompany his steak supper. But when he opened the 69p pack of Hori rice – bought from Farm Foods in Torquay – he found that it actually contained some variety of meat.

He showed the contents to his wife, who suggested he must have overcooked it, but discovered it contained no rice and the product actually resembled ”dog food”. Noel, of Torquay in Devon, said: ”I was about to pour the rice onto my plate when I saw something black. I looked in the packet and was horrified.

”I thought that doesn’t look like burnt rice. No way. It looked like dog vomit. My initial thought was that it looked like meat. I couldn’t see anything that looked like rice in it.” He has now made a complaint to Farm Foods and contacted Trading Standards, which plans to analyse the contents.
