Real-life Lassie limped to find help for unconscious owner after they were hit by car

A dog helped save her owner who was badly injured after being hit by a car. John Miles was walking his dog Lucy in Dorchester, Massachusetts as he does every day, when both of them were hit by the fast-moving vehicle.

Miles blacked out and doesn’t remember what happened. Lucy, a husky-beagle mix, who was also injured, limped to a nearby dentist’s office and barked until help arrived. She limped back and stayed by John’s side until emergency crews arrived. “I’m very happy that Lucy did what she did,” Miles said. “Makes me feel wonderful because if a dog as good as her can get recognition for doing something above and beyond good for her.”

Miles had no identification on him, so first responders used Lucy’s ID tags to determine who they were. “What I’m being told is she sat there and was crying and everything else, you know because I couldn’t get up,” Miles says. “That’s the type of dog she is.” Miles suffered major injuries including two broken legs, a broken arm and 15 facial fractures. He has to undergo surgery. Lucy is currently limping around with a torn ACL and leg fractures. Right now, she is clearly missing her owner.

“We found out that beagles actually cry, they have tear ducts,” said Caitlan Miles, John’s daughter. “So after the accident, when I was home with her, she had tears running down her fur. She is walking around lost without him.” Lucy will also have to have surgery. A fund has been set up to help pay for the cost of her care. “Once the winter’s over, if I’m recovered and Lucy’s recovered you can bet we’ll be out doing our walking again,” John said. Boston Police say the driver stopped after the accident and will not be charged.

Firefighters spent four hours freeing dog with foot stuck in bathtub plug hole

A dog in Lancaster, California was stuck in a bathtub for hours after his foot got caught in the plug hole on Thursday.

LA County firefighters spent four hours working to rotate the paw out of the drain.

A veterinarian sedated the one-year-old dog, Jesse, beforehand.

"We used bath gels and some soaps to help with the lubrication of sliding the dog’s foot out," LA County Fire Capt. Kirk Nelson said.

Man has travelled the world clad in pink tutu to make his cancer-suffering wife smile

When Bob Carey discovered his wife, Linda, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 his reaction was far from ordinary: he donned a pink tutu and embarked on a one-man mission to make her laugh during her chemotherapy.

“After Linda was diagnosed, that’s when I went into self-therapy mode. I grabbed a tutu and we went out and started making pictures,” said Bob, a professional photographer. He began to take pictures of himself clad only in a pink tutu in different locations to keep his wife’s spirits up during chemo.

Bob’s photos were so popular that the couple decided to found ‘The Tutu Project.’ As part of the initiative, he embarked on a journey around the US and to different countries, taking photos of himself in his pink tutu to contribute to the ‘Ballerina book.’ Bob has braved rain, snow and freezing temperatures to raise awareness for breast cancer sufferers.

Bob has already sold 3,000 of the 5,000 books he has printed, donating the proceeds to The Carey Foundation which was formed at the same time of The Tutu Project.

Around-the-clock security team assigned to protect Nativity scene

The nativity scene displayed on the front lawn at Greensboro College, North Carolina has been assigned around-the-clock security.

Back in 2007, vandals smashed and ripped it apart. It was created in 1936 and had to be replaced. The school then recovered a shepherd that was stolen two years ago, but they're not taking chances it won't happen again. So now, the school has resorted to around-the-clock security.

"I wish it weren't necessary, but stupid people are going to do stupid things," said Director of Communications Lex Alexander. They have surveillance cameras and even a security guard. Stancil Locklear says: "We're going to do what we've got to do to make sure nobody vandalises the nativity scene."

It's a job that doesn't allow holidays off. Locklear will be there on Christmas night. "I've got a 7-year-old daughter. I'm going to miss her, being home at night, her playing with her toys," he said. The security team will be on alert until the nativity scene is taken down some time after the holidays.

Vandals damage Scrabble artwork

Vandals have damaged a public artwork at Ellesmere Reserve in North Perth, Western Australia.

IMAG_NE by Emma Anna was vandalised on Friday night.

“It’s become quite a feature in the area and it’s disappointing to see some low-life cretin come along and do something like that to it,” said former Labor MP Bob Kucera.

“You couldn’t even call them a halfwit. It’d take two of them to make a halfwit.”

Rooster testicles seized at New Zealand border

Two kilograms of rooster testicles have been confiscated from a passenger arriving at Wellington International Airport from Vietnam.

"A passenger was coming in with a chilly bin full of food which he declared, and the items were found in that," a spokesman for the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said yesterday.

The testicles were stopped at the border because they presented a biosecurity risk, the MPI said. However, there was no penalty because the man had declared them. "These were intended to be eaten. As to how one would cook them, we are unsure," the ministry tweeted.

According to cooking website CloveGarden, rooster testicles are a popular delicacy in some Asian countries where they are believed to enhance male "prowess", and improve skin tone for women. "Rooster testicles are larger than you might think, but they need to be," CloveGarden says. "A rooster is expected to be up at the crack of dawn, crow his heart out - then 'service' 20 or more hens during the day."

Would-be burglar left dangling upside down with head on toilet had to ask intended victim for help

A bungling would-be burglar was left dangling upside down with his head on a toilet for more than an hour-and-half after getting stuck in a bathroom window. Daniel Severn, 27, dropped his mobile phone in the bath during the attempted break-in, so was unable to call for help.  The owner of the house woke up, ready to go to work, only to find Severn hanging over his toilet. Severn, who was wearing Marigold gloves and had a bag for his loot and a knife on him, said: “Please help. Call the police.”

Humberside Police raced to the house, in Howden, in the East Riding of Yorkshire where Severn was said to be “unexpectedly grateful” for the presence. Hull Crown Court heard he had made a full confession to the homeowners he wanted to steal their property. He even told them his name and that he was addicted to heroin. Severn, of Howden, pleaded guilty to burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of 260 diazepam tablets. Crown barrister Mark Kendal said: “Mr Wilson had gone to bed at his home in St John Street, Howden, which is a corner property, leaving the bathroom window open so the cat could get in his house. At 5.30am on November 20 he went to the bathroom as he got ready for work.

“As he approached the door he could hear moaning on the other side. As he opened the door he saw a man dangling inside his bathroom. One foot was trapped in the window. Daniel Severn’s head was resting on the toilet. The police were called and Daniel Severn remained where he was He told them his name and that he had been trying to ring the police himself because he had been stuck for over an hour. He had a shopping bag in his trousers. He told the complaint he was heroin addict looking for items to sell. He said he got his foot stuck climbing in the house. He had a mobile phone with a torch on it, but it had fallen in the bath. He had two pairs of gloves on so as not to leave finger prints and a Stanley knife.”

The court heard Severn had 80 previous convictions, but that he was not a very good criminal. Defending barrister Richard Sheldon said: “If his head had been 1ft to the right, it would have been down the toilet. Although the family had the horror of finding him, he has expressed genuine remorse.”Sentencing, Recorder Amanda Ripon told Severn: “You burgled this house in Howden while the occupants were asleep. You got yourself trapped. Your foot got stuck in the window and your head was near the toilet. It would be funny if it were not so serious an offence.” Severn was jailed for two years and four months.

Mystery of Epping Forest panther solved

A panther-like creature was spotted relaxing in a tree near Fairmead Road in Epping Forest, Essex by two City of London forest rangers on Wednesday.

There have been numerous sightings of the so-called Beast of Ongar, but no reports of a large wild cat in that part of the forest.

After approaching with extreme caution, the rangers made another shock discovery.

Upon closer inspection the pair realised it was simply a stuffed toy which had been left there by fly-tippers and placed on the branch of a tree.
