Police investigate whether serious crash involving motorised bar stool involved alcohol

A man has sustained serious head injuries after crashing his motorised bar stool north of Auckland, New Zealand on Friday afternoon.

Police say the 62-year-old man had just left the Puhoi pub on the recreational vehicle, a go-kart with a barstool on top, when the accident happened.

He wasn't wearing a helmet and was driving the vehicle on the road when he fell, sustaining serious head injuries. No other vehicles were involved, police say. "Whether alcohol was involved will be part of our investigation," Inspector Mark Fergus said.

"The vehicle was not road-legal and we've seized it so it can be mechanically examined. An investigation is also underway into who actually owns the mechanical bar stool." The man has been airlifted to Auckland Hospital in a serious condition.
