Taxi driver who'd tried to buy man's girlfriend's cats chased with pots, pans and sticks

A man from Fort Oglethorpe was arrested for assaulting a taxi driver earlier this week. It all started because the man was angry his girlfriend was selling cats to the taxi driver.

The taxi driver told police he was at the woman's home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to buy cats. But her boyfriend, 33-year-old Michael Kirby, didn't want to give them up, telling him the cats weren't for sale.

The cabbie was then cornered inside the front door of the residence, but forced his way out, left the door off its hinges, and jumped in his cab. That's when two men ran out, chasing him down the street with pots, pans and sticks. Before driving off, he said Kirby slammed the driver's side door of the car with a large stick with enough force to leave tree bark jammed into the dashboard.

Kirby was charged with aggravated assault and vandalism, but picked up an additional assault charge from jail the following day. The taxi driver, 24-year-old Ervin Morgan, was arrested for an unrelated theft. Police said Kirby went to Morgan's holding cell and punched him in the face because he thought Morgan "got him arrested on false charges."

Squirrel, cat, turtle and overhanging tree blamed for car crash

A Texas man claiming to have crashed his car while trying to avoid a turtle, a cat, a squirrel and an overhanging tree was arrested on a drunken driving charge on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old man from North Zulch, who was convicted of driving while intoxicated in Madison County in July 2009, was involved in a single-vehicle crash just after 1:00am police said.

A witness told police a vehicle passed him on the right by using the shoulder before striking a guardrail, exiting the highway and hitting a tree in a raised median inside a parking lot. When officers contacted the man, he was in the driver's seat, slurring his words and unaware of his location, police said.

The man told police the wreck occurred when he swerved to avoid the three animals and an overhanging tree, according to the report. He was charged with a second DWI, which is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail. The man was released from the Brazos County Jail on Wednesday after posting $7,500 bail.

Allegedly intoxicated man arrested after claiming his dog drove him to the store

A man was arrested in Oconee County, Georgia, on Wednesday after he claimed his dog drove him to the store.

Oconee County Sheriff Sgt. Partain says he responded to a call about a dog locked in a car at a Bell's Food Store.

The outside temperature registered at 99 degrees and the internal temperature of the car, which was measured with a handheld thermometer, was 123 degrees. Partain said a can of gasoline in the vehicle reeked and described the smell as "stifling."

The driver of the car, Wesley Mark Terrell, 60, told Partain that his dog drove him to Bell's to buy some corn. According to the sheriff, Terrell appeared to be highly intoxicated. Partain arrested Terrell and charged him with Animal Cruelty and DUI. Animal Control took custody of the dog.

Police say a man from southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, assaulted another man on Wednesday because he refused to party with him.

State police were dispatched to a home for a report of a fight shortly before 12:30am, Trooper James Spencer said.

Richard Edgar Hill, 29, of Peach Bottom, tackled a 21-year-old Avondale man and then struck him in the head with a glass hummingbird feeder because he was “refusing to party with him.”

Before police arrived, Hill fled toward Maryland, Spencer said. Hill will be charged with simple assault.

Hundreds of tennis balls blocking sewer puzzles engineers

A water firm has been left baffled after its engineers discovered hundreds of tennis balls blocking a sewer in Leicestershire. Severn Trent Water staff members were called out to investigate flooding in Melton Mowbray after rain water was unable to enter the drainage system.

If undiscovered, the balls could have caused sewage to build up in the area and overflow into people’s homes and gardens. Scott Burgin, sewerage network manager said: “We expect sewers to get blocked with fats or baby wipes, but not tennis balls. How on earth people have managed to flush quite so many, I don’t know, but this is just one example of amazing things we find blocking the sewers.

“Having sewage flooding inside your home due to sewers being blocked is one of the most horrible things that can happen to you, and we don’t want our customers to suffer in this way, as it’s entirely preventable." He added that only toilet roll, water and human waste are able to pass easily through home drainage systems which are usually only a few inches wide.

“These sewer blockages, if not identified and cleared can lead to sewers backing up and overflowing into people’s homes and gardens. So get yourself a bin in the bathroom and kitchen and use that rather than the toilet," he advised. “And if you have lots of spare tennis balls – donate them – I’m sure local schools or tennis clubs would love to have them.”
