Suspected bank robber arrested when stolen cash fell out of his trouser leg

A man was arrested on suspicion of robbing a bank in Merced, California, on Saturday afternoon. Police say Shawn Lee Canfield, 25, walked into the Chase Bank inside the Raley's grocery store at around 1:40pm and handed the teller a card demanding cash.

Authorities say the teller handed over $2,748, and the suspect took off. Officers say they were responding to the scene and caught up with Canfield nearby as he was trying to shove money down his pants.

The teller was taken to that location and positively identified him as the suspect. As detectives walked Canfield upstairs at the station, police say money started falling out of his trouser leg, and a total of $2,414 was collected.

During police questioning, the suspect was asked to stand up and an additional $334 fell out of his trouser leg, according to authorities. Investigators say Canfield admitted to the bank robbery and said he needed the money to get to Colorado to visit his mother. Canfield was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail for robbery and burglary.

Cherries Waffles Tennis arrested for fraud at water sports stores

Three Miami, Florida, residents were arrested on Tuesday after they reportedly made fraudulent purchases at two Jupiter shops, police said. A Juno Beach surf shop also called police after three people tried to make a questionable purchase.

Cherries Waffles Tennis, 19, Vincent Mitchell, 19, and Paul Miller, 22, walked into Ground Swell Surf Shop trying to buy two Ray Ban sunglasses worth $500 and a $100 GoPro camera.

Tennis asked the clerk to punch in the credit-card number instead of swiping it. The clerk became suspicious and declined the sale, according to an arrest report. The suspects then entered Scuba Works in Jupiter and bought a $400 spear gun. They bought a GoPro camera from Kite Paddle Wake, the report said.

The Jupiter scuba shop later confirmed the credit card was declined. Police said they spotted the suspects as they were leaving a gas station. Cherries Waffles Tennis told police that her aunt gave her a credit card to use but did not know where it was when police asked. Tennis, Mitchell and Miller were booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of fraud.

Member of Fifa’s financial watchdog arrested on suspicion of money-laundering

Fifa has asked for an explanation from Canover Watson, a member of the body’s financial watchdog, after he was arrested on suspicion of corruption and money-laundering in the Cayman Islands. Watson, one of eight members of Fifa’s Audit and Compliance Committee and a vice-president of the Caribbean Football Union, has denied the charges and has been released on bail.

“In agreement with the Ethics Committee we have asked Canover Watson whether he can share with the Audit and Compliance Committee any additional information,” said Domenico Scala, head of the committee. “Once we have more information we will consider appropriate measures.”

The Fifa committee is charged with ensuring the “completeness and reliability of the financial accounting” of world football’s governing body. The Cayman Islands Anti-Corruption Commissioner David Baines said that Watson was suspected of a “breach of trust contrary to section 13 of the Cayman Islands Anti-Corruption Law, as well as abuse of public office … and conflict of interest.”

Those allegations refer to Watson’s time at the head of Cayman’s Health Service Authority and follow a police investigation into the introduction of a swipe card system. Baines also cited “suspicion of money-laundering contrary to section 133 of the Proceeds of Crime Law” in the Watson case. Watson denied the allegations. No charges have yet been filed against Watson who under his bail terms is due to report back to police on 29 September.

London School of Economics apologises for Kung Fu Panda email

A top London university has apologised to students after a welcome email addressed them as Kung Fu Panda. The message left some students confused and others worried about "racial stereotyping". The London School of Economics, where some 25% of undergraduates are of east Asian origin, says the email was a due to "technical problem".

The email confirms that Kung Fu Panda "has accepted an unconditional offer of admission" to the LSE. The university says it was sent out to about 200 students before the mistake, due to a mail-merge error, was spotted.

An LSE spokeswoman said: "A welcoming email that LSE sent out to some successful applicants contained an error as a result of a technical problem with coding in the database used. This meant that the email did not pick up some of the fields correctly. For example, instead of inserting the applicant's name, the email included the name from a test record which is 'Kung Fu Panda'.

"The use of this 'name' merely reflects that a member of staff who set up the test record is a fan of the film. The email was sent to all students and did not target students from any particular background." The university says that other test names used include Piglet, Paddington, Homer, Bob and Tinkerbell.

Rare bird that survived 3,000-mile trip from Africa to Britain died after being mauled by cat

An "incredibly rare" bird has died after travelling thousands of miles from tropical Africa to Somerset then getting pounced on by a cat.

The wryneck is a rare summer visitor from sub-Saharan Africa, and was rescued from the paws of a cat in Burnham-on-Sea. It was taken to the Secret World animal rescue centre in East Huntspill, near Bridgwater, and despite the best efforts of staff there, it died last week.

"It is incredibly rare to see one here, and they spend a lot of time on the ground looking for ants, which is their main diet," explained Debbie O'Keefe, from Secret World. The sanctuary found ants for the bird to eat, but the trauma of the cat attack proved too much in the end. "He came in last Thursday and he had a few puncture wounds and was assessed by a vet.

"Nothing was broken but he didn't seem to want to fly and never really recovered. We tried to put him outside in an aviary and see if he'd move around a bit, but he didn't. We brought him back inside into an incubator, but unfortunately the next day he died. It's a real shame, but we tried our best. It's really sad because they are so rare on these shores."

Seal pup that took to the road in search of its mother rescued

A lost grey seal pup who dragged herself off a Pembrokeshire beach and took to the road in search of her mother has been rescued. The exhausted seal, named Jelly and just days old, was found at least half a mile from the beach at Abereiddy. A couple staying in a holiday cottage near the beach were woken by her cries and later found her on the road.

Jelly, who was skinny and underweight, will be cared for by the RSPCA before being released back into the sea. The rescue took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning. RSPCA animal collection officer Ellie West said: "Jelly was found in quite unusual circumstances. Members of the public renting a holiday cottage next to the beach woke up at 3am to a crying noise and found the seal at the back of the cottage.

"They tried to go back to bed, but continued to worry about its welfare and went out again but the seal wasn't there. They went looking for her and found her underneath a car half a mile up the road heading towards St David's. Jelly was quite skinny and underweight. She had been on quite an adventure trying to find mum, but she had strayed some distance from the coast.

"All she did was sleep when I got to her." Initially taken into safety by Terry Leadbetter from Welsh Marine Life Rescue, Jelly is now recovering at the RSPCA's West Hatch wildlife centre in Taunton, Somerset. She will stay there for a few months until she is ready to be released back into the wild.

Newlywed couple's wedding cake snaffled by cheeky dog

A newlywed couple arrived at their wedding reception to find that a dog had eaten the wedding cake. Matt, 35, and Kelly Gamblin, 32, of Dringhouses, north Yorkshire, married at York Register Office and held their reception in a marquee in the grounds of Skipwith Hall.

However, they arrived in Skipwith to find a dog had savaged the cake lovingly made by amateur baker and grandad of the bride Richard Varley, leaving the remains covered in dog hair. A trail of paw prints was also discovered on the dance floor. Caterers said they had shooed dogs away from the tent earlier in the day but it is believed the dog got in through a door left open for guests.

Kelly said: “As we walked in we didn’t know what was going on, as we’d been greeting guests. They thought it had broken in transit into two pieces, but we couldn’t find the other piece. Then we saw the claw marks and the hair.” As the dog is likely to have had icing all over its mouth and nose, Matt said he believed its owner would have known what their pet had done. But he added the chocolate sponge was likely to have disagreed with the canine.

He said: “Somewhere there was probably a poorly dog. When I found the cake had been snaffled my brother and his partner went to Selby to get a ‘consolation cake’. It was not until I had a couple of drinks that I realised the bride and groom cutting the cake is a staple wedding tradition and I was a bit heartbroken.” But Kelly added: “It was an amazing day. It didn’t get us down as we were with friends and family.”
