Police control room forced to block calls due to desperate Romeos calling for love talk

Desperate Romeos in Bareilly, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, are driving young women police officers at the city's police control rooms to distraction with their love talk. Hundreds of calls come each day asking the ladies out on a date. While some want to straight away marry them, others say they will make do if the policewomen indulge in some dirty talk.

A frustrated police department has now blocked the SIM cards of 90 mobile phone owners. In October alone, more than 1,738 such calls were made. Many among those, knowing full well that the calls were being recorded, spoke such obscenity that the women officers were forced to run to their seniors for help. Female staff at the control room say there are close to 100 such calls each day. Circle officer (CO) Asit Srivastava said the officers on duty warn some of these men, but no amount or intensity of threats seem to work.

"Some of these youths call again, just hours later, wanting to engage in some more lewd conversation." Srivastava said 90 SIM cards had been blocked from November 1 this year. Some of these cards belonged to men who made more than six calls a day to the police control room, he said. "We are trying to ascertain the identity of the callers," Srivastava said, adding that the callers could be booked under Sections 294 (indulging in obscenity), 186 (obstructing a government servant on duty), 504 (intentional insult with intention to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The CO added that there were occasions when the female officer would just hand the phone over to a male colleague, but the intrepid caller would roundly abuse the male officer, too, and threaten him with dire consequences. SP City Rajeev Malhotra said although the lewd calls had been made even earlier, attempts were made to track the numbers of the callers only in October. A police officer said that the callers were probably aware that the majority of women constables at the police control room were freshly recruited and young. Being new to the job, the women were not quite tough in their handling of lumpen elements, the official said.

10-year-old boy died in freak toilet explosion

A visit to a public toilet in Thane, Maharashtra, India, cost a 10-year-old boy his life at around 8pm on Wednesday, after an explosion took place in the underground septic tank, ripping apart the toilet’s passageway. The mishap, bizarre and ill-fated, occurred due to high-pressure gas collecting in the septic tank, after its vents were blocked by rubbish.

All the boy, Akash Singh, must have wanted was to relieve himself and join his friends playing nearby, but as he waited for his turn in the passageway in Lokmanya Nagar, the lid of the septic tank, placed right in the corridor, blasted off. The heavy metal lid of the tank fell on the child’s head, leading to severe head injuries. He was rushed to Thane Civil Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. “I last saw him in the evening, while he was playing with his friends.

“Late in the evening, we heard a loud thud from the toilet area. When we reached the spot, the boy was lying in a pool of blood. He sustained severe head injuries, as the tank’s lid had fallen on his head,” said Gopal, a relative of the deceased child, who was a Std V student at Gyanodaya Vidya Mandir School in Savarkar Nagar. Another person present there, Jiledar Singh (55), was in one of the toilet booths, and he sustained minor injuries in the incident. He was discharged after receiving treatment.

It later emerged that the freak accident was caused by high-pressure gas bottled up inside the septic tank, as the ventilation system had been blocked by garbage and dirt. Santosh Kadam, head of the disaster management cell at Thane Municipal Corporation said, “We received a call at around 8.30pm. After examining the spot, it was found that the ventilation area was covered by rubbish, due to which the gas kept accumulating inside the tank, thereby creating high pressure.” He added that an investigation would be launched to find who was responsible for collecting refuse at the spot, and appropriate action would be taken. Meanwhile, Vartak Nagar police have registered a case of accidental death.

Grieving jumbos wreaked havoc in village after member of herd was electrocuted

An angry herd of elephants kept on trumpeting and roaring for hours together scaring away people living in nearby hamlets in the forest area of Ramakuppam in Chittoor district, India, on Friday after one of its members died due to an electric shock.

The herd consisting of 13 pachyderms was crossing the agricultural fields at Ramapuram tanda of Nakkalgutta in the forest area of Ramakuppam when an elephant came in contact with a live electric wire set up by poachers to trap wild boars and deer. As the elephant lay dead, the other members in the herd surrounded it and started trumpeting loudly. The wails echoed in the forests causing panic among people living in neighbouring villages. Some of the villagers ran for safety.

A team of forest officials visited the spot and advised people against venturing near the angry pachyderms. The trumpeting continued for hours. Even forest officials did not go near the herd. Later, senior forest officials conducted panchanama and sent the dead elephant for post mortem examination. A case has been registered. About 30 elephants have been camping in the forest area in Chittoor district for the last 25 days.

Incidents of poachers and farmers setting up electric fencing in areas abutting the forests have been increasing with authorities turning a blind eye to the menace. Kuppam and Ramakuppam areas fall in the junction of two major national parks in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and elephants of late prefer staying in Chittoor district for a few days while crossing between the two neighbouring states. Forest officials point out that elephants have started liking juicy tomatoes that are grown in the border areas of Chittoor district, which otherwise is not a traditional habitat of the pachyderms.

Footballer banned for 50 years after kicking ball in referee's face and spraying him with water

A Switzerland-based amateur footballer has been banned for 50 years after kicking a ball in the referee's face and spraying him with water.

Portugal Futebol Clube defender Ricardo Ferreira has already served a 45-game ban for assaulting opposition players. "I had expected one or two years maximum. But 50 years? Football's my life," Ferreira, 28, said.

The fourth-tier league's lawyer Robert Breiter said: "We do not want such a player in our league." Breiter continued: "Unfortunately we encounter such cases about once a year."

Ferreira had been an unused substitute in his team's match against SC Worb in the Bern league when he attacked the referee after the final whistle. Ferreira will be free to return to footballing activity on 5 June 2064, by which time he will be 78.

Council officials make Greyfriars Bobby's nose rubbing plea

Tourists are being asked to only touch Greyfriars Bobby's nose "gently" after work to restore the statue failed again. Edinburgh city council officials said damage was still being done following restoration work to fix the dog's nose. The statue is popular with tourists, many of whom have taken to rubbing the Skye Terrier's nose for luck.

The local authority said it had no plans to redo the work soon. Richard Lewis, Edinburgh city council's culture and sport convener, said: "The council arranged for work to be carried out to fix Bobby's nose 12 months ago, but damage is still being done and the restoration is already wearing off.

"In time, we will organise repair work again to maintain the statue, which we know is one of Edinburgh's most loved monuments, but there are no plans to carry out more work out in the near future. If people do feel obliged to rub Bobby's nose could we encourage them to do it gently, as it really does cause damage." The real Bobby was the pet of Edinburgh constable John Grey, who died of tuberculosis in 1858.

Bobby was said to have stayed close to where his master was buried. The dog's period of mourning reputedly lasted until his own death in 1872. However, a historian at Cardiff University believes he has uncovered evidence that the story is not true. Dr Jan Bondeson said there were distinct differences in photos and paintings of Bobby which fell into two groups - those before 1867 and those after.

Man banned from singing sexually explicit songs in public

A Welsh man has been given an anti-social behaviour order that bans him from singing sexually explicit songs in public. Mark Thomas, 49, of Trethomas was given the order at Caerphilly Magistrate’s Court after a catalogue of anti-social behaviour in his community.

The court heard Jones displayed frequent anti-social, noise nuisance and intimidating behaviour, and despite interventions his behaviour continued. The ASBO, that covers his behaviour across Caerphilly County Borough, also prevents him from approaching his next door neighbours or their visitors, playing loud music that can be heard outside his house, acting in an anti-social manner and interfering with vehicles that don’t belong to him.

Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “This individual’s behaviour has severely impacted upon the quality of life of other residents over a period of time, and I hope the gaining of this order will send a clear message to anyone else who feels it is acceptable to act anti-socially that their behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer, PC Stuart Lewis, said: “This individual’s anti-social behaviour had a detrimental effect on his neighbours lives. I am sure that this ASBO will now offer them some respite. This ASBO sends out a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in the Caerphilly Borough. I would urge anyone who has been a victim of anti-social behaviour to report the incidents immediately – we will support you and deal with perpetrators robustly.”
