Indian woman beheads man then parades it through streets
A woman chopped the head off a man who allegedly tried to attack her and then paraded the head through a market in northern India, police said yesterday.
Police arrested the woman late on Thursday after receiving calls from frightened witnesses who reported a blood-soaked woman holding a severed head was walking through the village, said police officer Ram Bharose.
The woman, 35, told police she had gone to a nearby forest to cut grass for fodder for her cattle when a man attacked her from behind.
"In a bid to save her dignity she beheaded him with a sickle," Bharose said, adding that the woman had bite marks on her neck and cheek.
The woman also told police that the man had been harassing and stalking her for three months and she had no regrets about killing him, he said, adding that she would probably be charged with culpable homicide.
The incident took place in Makkapurva village, some 125 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

A Bauchi-based businessman, Malam Sama’ila Tahir has dragged his 20-year-old son, Jamilu Sama’ila, before a Bauchi Lower Sharia Court for idleness.
Reports say that Tahir, a trader at the Bauchi Central market, had dragged his son before the court, asking the court to send him to prison for being idle.
Tahir also accused his son of belonging to a gang of criminals. Tahir told the court that his son had refused to go to school or engage in productive activities in spite of counseling and guidance by his family.
“He is not listening to words and he is bringing shame to my family.
“I am tired of his nefarious deeds. Please, put this boy in prison so that I can be free,’’ Tahir pleaded. In his submission before the court, Jamilu admitted the charges but sought for leniency.
In a ruling, the Presiding Judge, Malam Tanimu Abubakar, said the court was convinced by the voluntary submission of the charge by the accused and sentenced him to six months imprisonment under section 95 of the Sharia panel code.
The court also ordered the convict to 30 strokes of the cane for being disobedient to his parents, which were immediately administered at the court premises.

Iran makes huge ostrich sandwich
Cooks in Iran have tried to assemble the world's largest ostrich sandwich at a food festival in Tehran, as part of a bid to promote healthy eating.
The organisers want to promote Iran's fledgling ostrich farming business.
About 1,500 cooks used 1,000kg (2,200lbs) of ostrich meat to make the 1,500m (4,920ft) long sandwich.
The organisers hope those world-beating dimensions will be enough to earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest ostrich sandwich ever.
It took two days to prepare the sandwich, and a huge measuring tape ran the length of the table on which it was sitting.
Ostrich farmers point out that the flesh of their eccentric bird has half as much fat as chicken, lots of iron, and very little cholesterol - as well as being extremely tasty.

New Zealand man gets community work for cruelty to mouse
Former Devonport resident Lindsay Rowles has plead guilty to charges relating to a February 8 attack on a pet mouse.
Rowles, 54, appeared at the North Shore District Court on Friday facing charges of cruelty to an animal and offensive behaviour relating to the incident as well as unrelated drink-driving, drug and disorderly behaviour charges.
On February 8, a woman was walking along a Devonport road carrying her son's pet mouse, Nibbles, in her blouse. She walked across the road to to Rowles' home to see his wife when he noticed the mouse. He pulled the mouse by its tail from the woman's top before lowering it into his mouth.
The mouse wriggled as Rowles closed his mouth, pretending to eat it while the distraught victim and his wife pleaded he take the mouse out. He flicked the saliva-covered and motionless Nibbles back into the victim's hand.
Judge Barbara Morris said Rowles' actions can only be described as bizzare. She said it was very cruel that the woman was forced to watch her family pet be killed. "The trauma would have been significant."
She sentenced Rowles to 180 hours' community work, 12 months' supervision and to undergo drug and alcohol counselling.

It took a 3,000-mile detour, after getting blown off course en route to South America, before alighting in England's green and pleasant land.
But, sadly, the arrival of the American Common Nighthawk, which has never been seen before in this country is not a happy one.
The rare bird appears to have landed and then been promptly run over by a car in the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. It was found by birdwatchers dead at the roadside.
They then took its remains to a local pub where it was given a rather unconventional post mortem examination on a pool table.
Pub manager Dave Chodkiewicz said: 'Some bird watchers picked it up dead and brought it into the club.
'It was examined on the pool table in the middle of the bar and identified it. I'd never seen anything like it before. They all gathered around like vultures.'

Fake tiger terrifies cyclist in Devon
A tiger that surprised a North Devon cyclist has been tracked down and it's just a big old softie.
It was reported last week that police were contacted by Adam Dobby after he saw what he took to be an adult tiger in the back of an estate car.
Mr Dobby, a surfer and teaching assistant, was convinced the animal was real when he saw it in Bideford in a car near the Heywood roundabout.
The Bideford College employee said the animal was lying down in the back of the car, which had no cage, and its head was definitely moving.
Now Terry Western from Clovelly has come forward and confirmed it was his tiger and it was only a toy.
He said: "It does look very real and almost everybody does a double-take. I have always kept the tiger — who is called Tigger — in the boot of my car. It is just nice to show him off. I have another one called Toby who lives on my porch."

Without Ray Lowry one of the most visually striking record sleeves in the history of rock music would never have existed.
The cartoonist and graphic designer, who has died aged 64, was remembered yesterday by colleagues and admirers for the distinctive, dark illustrations that adorned publications from Oz and Private Eye to the NME over four decades.
Perhaps his greatest achievement rests, however, in an image that he did not draw: the cover of the Clash's 1979 album London Calling.
The photograph that dominates the sleeve shows Paul Simonon pounding his bass guitar into the stage after a show at the New York Palladium in September 1979.
Pennie Smith, who took it, thought that the shot was too grainy to blow up. It needed Lowry, serving as the band's “official war artist” on that American tour, to persuade her that it would work as a cover. Lowry then framed the shot with the words “London” and “Calling” in a typeface, colour scheme and design that recalled the sleeve of Elvis Presley's debut album, the underlying suggestion being that the Clash's music offered the same sense of swagger and danger that Presley's had 20 years earlier.

Friends of 30 years discover they are actually sisters
Two women who have known each other for nearly 30 years spoke of their shock – after discovering they were sisters.
Deborah Day, 44, and Marilyn Morris, 45, were separated just two months after Deborah's birth, when she went to live with an adoption family – a 15-minute walk from her real family.
The pair, from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, were unwittingly reunited as teenagers, when they both worked at a local supermarket and quickly sparked up a close friendship – despite being totally unaware they were related.
The amazing discovery finally came to light when eldest sister Sally Griffiths, 46, decided to trace her "lost" siblings after finding out Deborah had been put up for adoption as a baby.
After she found her adopted sister, Sally began a search for Marilyn after the pair had lost touch years earlier.
When the family were eventually reunited, the sisters were shocked to discover they had all lived within one mile of each other and even sent their children to the same school.

Burglar's bouquet for his victim
A burglar suffered pangs of conscience after coming face to face with a 91-year-old woman while prowling round her house.
So next day he got a florist to deliver a bunch of flowers and a note saying sorry.
The elderly woman, who lives in the Spring Hall area of Halifax, confronted the raider at 4am.
He fled empty-handed and next day sent the flowers and an apology, saying he thought the house was empty.
Detective Insp Tony Nicholson said: "I've never come across such behaviour during my time in the police.
"We appeal to this man to do the right thing and come forward."

Cat 'rescued' after being stuck in tree for ten days
A falling cat does land on its feet. In Franklin County Virginia, this grey tabby was stuck in a tree for ten days.
And, the man who lives in the house didn't even own the cat but said it was hard listening to it cry day and night.
Luckily, on Tuesday, a tree company was already in the neighbourhood doing some trimming.
They used their gear to shake the branches and apparently rattle the cat.
The cat jumped then took off across the street.
No one knows where the cat went, but the property owner says he's just hoping it doesn't come back.

Space 'smells like fried steak'
Outer space smells like fried steak, hot metal and welding a motorbike, according to Nasa scientists.
Nasa has commissioned Steven Pearce, a chemist and managing director of fragrance manufacturing company Omega Ingredients, to recreate the smell of space in a laboratory.
His research will be used to help astronauts prepare for the conditions they will encounter in space. Mr Pearce began working for Nasa in August and hopes to have recreated the smell of space by the end of the year.
He said: "I did some work for an art exhibition in July, which was based entirely on smell and one of the things I created was the smell of the inside of the Mir space station. "Nasa heard about it and contacted me to see if I could help them recreate the smell of space to help their astronauts.
"We have a few clues as to what space smells like. First of all, there were interviews with astronauts that we were given, when they had been outside and then returned to the space station and were de-suiting and taking off their helmets, they all reported quite particular odours.
"For them, what comes across is a smell of fried steak, hot metal and even welding a motorbike, one of them said. We have already produced the smell of fried steak, but hot metal is proving more difficult. We think it's a high energy vibration in the molecule and that's what we're trying to add to it now."

Dressed in heels and blonde wig, man breaks into beauty shop
A man was arrested for breaking into a beauty shop on Wednesday night. Authorities say the suspect disguised himself as a woman, wearing high-heeled shoes and a blonde wig.
Baldwin County Sheriff's deputies said Frederic M. Koetter, 42, confessed to the crime at Curl and Style beauty shop on County Road 65 and near County Road 26, after he was identified by two witnesses.
Koetter broke into the beauty shop to see himself in the mirror, dressed as a woman, deputies said. As investigators interviewed the owner of the beauty shop, they noticed an odd resemblance- Koetter was dressed like the shop owner, with fake hair and clothes.
Koetter insisted he was not trying to look like the shop owner, but said he did want to sit in her chair and see what he looked like.
