Smelly bins? Get some Odour Eaters

Householders struggling to cope with reduced rubbish collections have been told to fit odour-eating insoles to wheelie bins in a bid to tackle foul smells.

The bizarre advice follows the adoption of fortnightly collections by more than 100 councils, so that they can devote more resources to meeting Government recycling targets.

And council chiefs are being forced to come up with increasingly desperate schemes to tackle the anti-social effects of their policy.

The latest suggestion is that shoe insoles - normally used to ward off unpleasant smells created by fungal infections - can be used to purify the air around overflowing dustbins.

Waste management officials at Redditch Borough Council in Worcestershire insist it can be effective. On its website, under the section entitled "Won't wheelie bins smell if left uncollected for two weeks?", the council states: "Carbon filters can be bought from DIY stores which can be fitted to bin lids, or use "Odour Eater" foot insoles for the same purpose."
