A vet has been struck off after a misconduct panel heard how he became addicted to animal sedatives and tried to staple a greyhound's leg when he was supposed to treat its tail.
Michael Mario McCarthy, 31, slurred his words as he asked the horrified owners if they wanted to carry out the treatment.
He then fired staples randomly into the dog, telling them: 'I get paid a lot of money for this.'
McCarthy appeared before a board of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons yesterday and admitted disgraceful professional conduct.
The board heard that he unnecessarily prescribed heroin for a terminally-ill collie and later asked the dog's owner if he could buy back the drugs.
He was sacked from the surgery and interviewed by police when he admitted stealing dangerous drugs from the practice.
