Dwarf hippo baby attracts attention at Paris zoo

Twenty-one inches long and a mere 22 pounds, Aldo, a three-week-old pygmy hippopotamus, made his press debut at the Vincennes zoo, part of the Museum of Natural History, in Paris on Tuesday.

His mother, Anais, gave birth to Aldo June 5 after a 199-day gestation period.

Unlike normal amphibian hippos—which could weigh as much as 3.3 tons as adults—pygmy hippos like Aldo will only weigh between 352 and 606 pounds.

It's estimated 2,000 to 3,000 pygmy hippos currently live in the wild, while 110 pygmy hippos are presently kept in captivity in Europe.
