Snow wreaks havoc across South Africa

A huge swathe of South Africa is still battling the aftermath of one of the heaviest snowfalls in decades, which trapped hundreds of motorists, isolated towns and caused flight delays.

There was widespread chaos as temperatures remained doggedly below zero and snow, which began falling late on Tuesday, continued in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

Pretoria, which last saw snow in June 1968, had light snowfalls in the suburb of Waverley.

And in Johannesburg, in the first real snowfall since 1981, a homeless man was found dead.

On a lighter note, as temperature plummeted to -1°C on Tuesday night, at least one amorous couple found a way to get warm.

The naked pair were arrested when police caught them having sex in a car parked in the veld in Bramfischerville on the West Rand.

Superintendent Thembi Nkhwashu said the 25-year-old woman and 32-year-old man were arrested for public indecency.

Then the man made things worse by trying to bribe the patrolling police officer with R100 - only to have a further charge, of corruption, slapped on him.
