Squeaky the piglet could be for chop - Update

The piglet that fell off the back of a lorry could soon be sent home - and fattened for slaughter.

A man has contacted the RSPCA claiming to be Squeaky's owner and officials are checking to see if his claim is valid.

Squeaky was found after she rolled out through a gap in the side of a trailer where her mum had given birth to her just minutes before.

Motorist Anthony Davies spotted the piglet in the road as he was driving through Poolsbrook, near Chesterfield. He took her to an RSPCA shelter.

Staff at the shelter have received dozens of offers of a home for the 10-dayold Tamworth porker.

But an RSPCA spokeswoman said: "If the claim is confirmed then the little piglet will be handed over. Unfortunately it could be that the pig will eventually end up on its way for slaughter.

"We are not against animals going for meat as long as they are well cared for and are slaughtered in the correct manner."
