Teacher arrested for making underpants from Indian flag

For years, retired school teacher Dhulipada Dutta had a pillowcase. Nothing unusual about that. Except that it was a tricolour that Dhulipada had turned into a pillowcase.

Once tired of his pillowcase, he sent it to the tailor, asking him to make an underwear out of it.

On Saturday morning, Sabyasachi Mistri, a class XII student of Palashipara Mahatma Gandhi High School, spotted the half-stitched underwear hanging at a tailor’s shop at Palashipara bus stand. He was stunned when the tailor told him "master moshai" had asked him to make an underwear out of the flag.



Sabyasachi protested, as did the others in the locality. Word spread and by evening, Dhulipada was behind bars for showing disrespect to the national flag.

"I couldn’t believe what the tailor was telling me. I checked out the half-sewn underwear. It was the tricolour and the Ashok Chakra was intact. It was hard to believe that a teacher had asked him to make an underwear out it," Sabyasachi said.

"We had great respect for him. Teachers are expected to teach values and show respect to national heroes and symbols," said Baidyacharan Mullik, a Palashipara resident. Facing public ire, Dhulipada admitted he was in the wrong. "This is a mistake," he acknowledged before leaving the shop.
