Thief paid £3,000 to leave UK back next day

A prolific thief who was paid £3,000 by the Government to leave Britain returned the next day to continue stealing, a court has heard.

Hakim Benmakhlouf, 26, who is Algerian, preyed on tourists and guests at five-star hotels and restaurants, stealing cash, passports and designer handbags.

Benmakhlouf, who dressed from head to toe in designer clothes, was caught and convicted, then offered £3,000 under a "voluntary repatriation" scheme.

He took the money and left Britain but returned by Eurostar from Paris the next day to continue his lucrative crime spree, Southwark Crown Court heard.

One investigating officer described Benmakhlouf as the "best thief I have ever seen".

Sentencing, Judge John Price jailed him for three years and recommended that he be deported as soon as he has served his term.
