Jail's lone Scot demands haggis

The sole Scottish prisoner at an English jail is demanding to be served haggis – on racial grounds.

Dave Devers claims there is 'inadequate provision of food for a Scottish diet' and also wants porridge and square sausage at meal times.

He says he is being singled out because of his ethnicity and that his human rights are being breached. Other minorities, such as Muslims and Afro-Caribbeans, are served their own delicacies, he argues.

The lonely lag is also calling on officials to transfer other Scottish inmates to the prison so he has someone to talk to.

Devers, who calls himself an 'ethnic Jock', is the only Scot at the 380-man HMP Wolds in East Yorkshire. 'I am in a minority of one, so bring on porridge (with salt), square sliced sausage and, of course, haggis,' he wrote in a prison paper.

The Ministry of Justice said it had not received a complaint from Devers but a source at the jail said: 'If we give him haggis, he's probably going to start demanding Irn Bru to wash it down.'
