Baby gibbon rescued by toy camel

A baby gibbon whose mother was unable to feed her has found an unlikely surrogate mum - a toy camel. The baby Siamang Gibbon actually cries like a human when it's new mum is not around.

The ten-day-old female was starving to death after her real mother failed to produce any milk.

But a worker at Noah's Ark Zoo, in Bristol, where the endangered gibbon lives, came to the rescue with a toy camel and a pipette. Now being hand fed on a special formula the cheeky monkey is fighting back to health.

Sadie Garland, who looks after the baby, said: ''We would have preferred to keep her with mum but after close monitoring the baby was clearly going down hill.

''It was decided that it would be in the best interest of the baby to intervene. We have given the baby gibbon a toy camel which she cuddles all day.

''She is quite fragile at the moment but is progressing well and we are hopeful that she will eventually be put back in the gibbon gallery with mum and dad.''
