Big fine for cardboard policeman vandal

A vandal who drew a moustache and glasses on a life-size cardboard cutout of a policeman has been told he must pay more than £200 in fines, costs and compensation.

Ryan McGlynn, of Snowdrop Drive, Attleborough, appeared before magistrates at Swaffham on Tuesday.

The court heard that on August 10, McGlynn, 20, had gone up to the cutout at the Sainsbury's store in Mundesley Road, Attleborough, and drawn a moustache and a pair of glasses on the image.

Dorothy Pulsford-Harris, prosecuting, told the court the cutout had been part of a display by the local policing team.

She said that when interviewed about the incident, McGlynn told police he had been drinking, was high on drugs and “did it for a laugh”. But McGlynn, who represented himself from the dock, denied he had been high on drugs at the time of the offence but admitted he had been drinking.

Magistrates fined McGlynn £50, ordered him to pay for the cost of a replacement sign at £111.63, pay £60 court costs and a £15 surcharge. Chairman of the bench Julia Richardson told McGlynn: “For just a few minutes of stupidity this is what the consequences are.”
