Professional footballer's house was untidy not burgled

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi called police to say his house had been burgled, only to phone back and admit it was not raided – it was just untidy.

The 27-year-old star had reported the theft of personal belongings from his £500,000 home in Jesmond, Newcastle, on Boxing Day.

But just days later, Ameobi contacted detectives – who were set to launch an inquiry – to say his home wasn't the victim of burglars, it was just a mess.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "It appears to have been a genuine misunderstanding."
