Nudist beach closed by coastal erosion

Britain's oldest official nudist beach is to be closed after the summer due to coastal erosion.

The beach is being shut because so much surrounding sand and shingle has been lost to coastal erosion, meaning there is less space for non-nudists to enjoy.

But the closure has angered hundreds of naturists who regularly bare all on the 200 yard stretch of beach at Corton near Lowestoft, Suffolk

British Naturism which has 14,000 members and represents Britain's estimated 1.5 million nudists is upset that the council has not come up with an alternative site.

Malcolm Boura, 55, the group's research and liaison officer, said: "This will come as a blow to our members and will upset a lot of people."

A council spokesman said Corton had a long sandy beach with enough space for naturists and other users when the nudist area was first designated. He added: "However significant beach erosion during the past 20 years has led to a reduction of some 80pc of the available beach space. Therefore, the communities of Corton and the visitors to this area have little or no beach to access without entering the designated naturist area."
