Sunbed grown cannabis seized by police

Police from North East Leeds made an unusual discovery when raiding a suspected cannabis factory and found the plants being grown in two large sunbeds.

Officers from the Burmantofts and Richmond Hill Neighbourhood Policing Team were executing a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act on Nixon Avenue, East End Park when they found the sunbeds, normally used in tanning salons, packed with plants.

Nobody was at home when neighbourhood police officers, supported by West Yorkshire Police's Operational Support Unit, raided the house on Monday morning (6 March) following reports from the local community that cannabis was being cultivated at the property.

An investigation is currently ongoing to trace the owner/s of the house.

Inspector Jackie Hawkes, who leads the Burmantofts and Richmond Hill Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We have uncovered a number of cannabis farms before but never one quite like this.

"The unusual nature of the cannabis production does not make this any less of a crime and I would continue to urge the local community to contact us if they believe someone living nearby is engaged in criminal activity."
