Firefighters rescue man trapped a charity recycling bin

Midhurst firefighters went to the rescue when a man became trapped inside a charity clothes recycling bin.

Station officer Nigel Gamblen said: "In 35 years with the fire service this was one of the oddest calls I have come across.

"When we got to the recycling bin in the Grange Road all we could see were two eyes looking out through the metal drawer. I wouldn't like to say how he came to be in there, but he must have been very agile to climb through the opening and get inside."

The man had apparently climbed into the metal drawer which had tipped back and he became trapped around 3.30am on Monday.

Once inside there was no way the man could release himself and he used his mobile phone to call police and ask for help. Fire fighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to force open the locked door of the Salvation Army metal clothes bin and freed the man.

Once he was released the young Latvian man, who, a fire service spokesman said, was believed to be drunk, was handed over to the care of police officers.
