Newborn baby named after layby

A mother has named her newborn baby after the layby in which he was born in a car as she raced to the hospital.

Kate Flello's son Toby Westbury Sterry was born one month early in the layby on the A48 in Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire.

Miss Flello, 32, and her partner Brian Sterry, 35, were racing to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital but had to pull over to dial 999 for an ambulance to meet them at the layby.

But Toby would not wait and Mr Sterry was forced to act as midwife and deliver his son at the roadside just as a paramedic arrived. A passing male accident and emergency nurse stopped his car in the layby to help on April 8. Toby was born a healthy 5lb 6oz,

Miss Flello, from Cinderford, who has a 20-month-old son Aaron, said: "I did want a home birth but not a car birth. It was so painful that I was chewing the seats and there are still teeth marks on the handle inside the car.

"It's all a bit of a blur, but I do remember a double-decker Stagecoach bus going past and thinking 'I hope they can't see anything'," she said. "We wanted to call him something appropriate and Toby Westbury is better than Toby Astra."
