As the heatwave hit and temperatures soared, sun seekers and the body beautiful donned their beachwear to soak up the rays. But for some the heat was all too much to "bare" and to the delight of passing schoolboys off came all their clothes.
But these were no ordinary bare-naked bathers, but risqué mugs in a shop window left completely nude by the sizzling heat of the sun. The mugs were part of a window display put up by owner Claire Whittam at her shop "Serendipity" in Burnley Road, Padiham, but little did she know the stir it would cause.
She said: "I did a window display with all sorts of mugs, including the novelty strip mugs we have. The female ones are in a pose and there's male ones too and when you put hot water in the mugs they reveal themselves. They have been quite popular, but we noticed a lot of schoolboys hanging around outside the window and wondered why."
For several days the sun shone down on the window, and more and more people were stopping to gaze at the display. "People were walking past and pointing, but I just thought it was because of the bikinis."
However, Mrs Whittam found out the naked truth of the matter when she discovered her mugs had lost their clothes, and with it their modesty.
"It has caused great amusement, especially with the schoolboys who seemed to notice it before anyone. I've had to remove the mugs because I just can't get them to regain their clothing, as the window stays hot all day."
