Orangutan escapes enclosure at Australian zoo

The Perth Zoo will review the security of its primate enclosures after an orangutan escaped during peak visiting hours yesterday.

A 15-year old female orangutan used a broken rope to swing itself onto the edge of the enclosure and then climbed out.

Perth Zoo chief executive Susan Hunt says it is the first time in 15 years an animal has escaped at Perth Zoo.

"We've got the best quality enclosure, we have constant emergency checks and drills," she said.

"It's a very, very low risk of anything like this happening.

"I've been at the zoo for nine years, it's the first time it's happened, so this young orangutan is obviously a very intelligent young orangutan."
