Fireworks record 'disappointing'

Spectators who turned up to watch a fireworks world record attempt at a Dorset festival said they were disappointed it lasted only seconds.

About 175,000 people saw the Roar on the Shore display, which marked the start of the four-day Bournemouth Air Festival on Thursday.

Organisers were "confident" they had set a new record by setting off 110,000 fireworks in under a minute. The display lasted six minutes, and the record attempt just six seconds. Ali Robertson, from the display team, said people were disappointed because they had been expecting a different type of display.

The record attempt was made using rockets which explode shortly after ignition and therefore do not travel far up into the air.

The devices most people associate with a fireworks display are "aerial display shells", which have a time-delay and only explode once they have reached high into the sky.

The rockets were launched from a barge, which then caught fire, between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers at about 2130 BST.
