A bizarre group therapy session in which patients were given illicit drug cocktails including ecstasy has left two men dead and a third in a coma in Germany. Their doctor, whose practice in a quiet outer suburb of Berlin offers "help with spiritual crises" for treating addiction and dependence, has been arrested over the deaths.
Garri Rober, 50, reportedly admitted to police that he gave his patients the cocktails of drugs on Saturday night. German news reports said the drugs also included heroin and amphetamines.
Police found a 59-year-old man dead at the scene. A 28-year-old man died later in hospital while a third remains in a critical condition.
At least nine other people took part in the therapy session and all suffered ill-effects from the drugs. Emergency services were reportedly alerted by a fire alarm. When they arrived, some of the session participants were aggressive and had to be restrained by police.
Rober is an adherent to the controversial Swiss psychiatrist Samuel Widmer, who promotes the use of drugs in therapy and is considered to have highly permissive views on polygamy and group love.
The sign outside Rober's practice reportedly offered treatments that employed illicit drugs. It was not clear how the doctor got away with offering illegal substances, which included LSD and psychedelic mushrooms.
