Woman made girl ride in box on roof of van

Albertville Police arrested a woman and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child after a bizarre turn of events on Saturday. Police say they found her driving on Highway 431 with a teenager riding in a box on top of her minivan.

Jackie Denise Knott, 37, of Goldkist Street, was taken to the Albertville City Jail. Police say someone called them about a minivan traveling on Highway 431 with a large cardboard box on the roof. A child was inside the box.

Officers stopped the van on Highway 431. They found a 13-year-old girl inside the box. Police questioned Knott about why the child was inside the box, and she said "the box was too big to go inside the van and she would be able to hold it down if she was inside the box."

Police then asked Knott if they thought the child was safe in this position, on top of the minivan. She replied, saying "the box was tied to the van with a clothes hanger." Police arrested Knott on the spot. The child is in the care of a relative. Police will notify the Marshall County Department of Human Resources about the incident. Knott is now out of jail.
