You might have heard of the phrase 'raining cats and dogs', but for a shop in Weston it was raining foxes. The falling creature crash landed into a pile of handbags in Dolphin Leather Goods in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, on Monday.
The fantastic Mr Fox, who might have been getting some early Christmas shopping done, fell through a loose ceiling tile. Startled shoppers gawped into the Dolphin Square store window as the furry four-legged creature nestled between some bags.
Store owner Ruth Reeves photographed the fox on her mobile phone and called rescuers at Secret World Wildlife Rescue. Ruth, aged 47, said: "We heard some scratching and a kerfuffle and saw something fall from the roof.
"I heard him land and thought 'Am I seeing things?' He was so soft and furry and he let me stroke him like a little cat.
"All the people outside came to see him and quite a crowd gathered. It was just incredible. I thought 'gosh'."
A caretaker for the site placed the fox in a dark cupboard until a volunteer from Secret World, which is based in East Huntspill, took him away. A spokesman for the charity said the fox had no broken bones but might be concussed, as it is unusual for the animal to allow humans so close.
