Mother turns in 36-year-old son for having parking meter in his closet

A 36-year-old Jersey City Heights man was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property after his mother found a parking meter stashed in his bedroom closet .

Thomas Gaughran, 36, of Beach Street near Liberty Avenue was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property after police responded to his home on a domestic violence call but found a parking meter.

The mother told cops she found the Jersey City Police Department coin operated parking meter cleaning out his closet Saturday, police spokesman Edgar Martinez said.

She told her son to get out of the house. But he refused and they argued, so she called police, Martinez said.

Gaughran told investigators he removed the meter from near Graham Street and Central Avenue four months ago.

Apparently he was never able to remove the coins from the meter, which had extensive damage to the upper metal casing and lower base, Martinez said.
