An elderly Australian woman has been taken to hospital suffering shock after being released from a car hanging over the ledge of a car park in Sydney's west. A New South Wales Fire Brigades spokesman said emergency crews were called to the car park on George Street, Parramatta, about 11am (AEDT).
A police spokeswoman said the vehicle was hanging from the first storey of the car park. "It appears she's gone halfway through a brick wall," the spokeswoman said.
The car hung over demountable classrooms of Arthur Phillip High School. Fortunately for students, they are on holidays.
Parramatta Police detective acting inspector Steve Grimmond said the driver, from Baulkham Hills, was in her late 50s or early 60s. "She thought she was in reverse gear, hit the accelerator and the car went through the barrier and brick wall,’’ he said.
NSW Fire Brigades Superintendent Ian Krimmer said the woman was freed from the car after it was stabilised by fire rescue officers.
"They removed the rear hatch of the vehicle, they then removed the rear seats of the vehicle and then, together with ambulance paramedics, the woman was pulled through the back of the car."
