Tattoo earns Australian man European holiday for parents

Grant Burton has chosen a unique way of giving his parents the trip of a lifetime.

Unemployed after being laid off from his security job at Christmas, the 30-year-old didn’t have the cash to treat his parents to a train journey across Europe to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and his mother Cheryl’s 60th birthday.

So he offered to get his back tattooed in Elsternwick with a Eurail logo and web address in exchange for two free rail passes from the Netherlands-based company. Eurail got back within 30 minutes of his email: “They were all for it,” Mr Burton said.

Mr Burton, who lives with his parents in Macleod, said his 78-year-old father John was almost in tears when he found out he was going to Europe in November.

“They worked hard for years while bringing up six kids,” Mr Burton said. “They put a roof over our heads and food on the table. I wanted to return the favour.”

Mr Burton went under the needle for two hours on Friday to get the 15cm x 11cm tattoo between his shoulder blades.
