Seriously, I would rather have the original photograph of this scene that asks so many questions.. Who? Where? When? Why? (plus the added unknown inclusion of the fox and cat), instead of the multi million dollar/pound/yen prices paid for 'so called' art that sometimes leaves me aghast at the absurdity of the piece... I sometimes wonder if the artworld is nothing more than a scam, perpetrated by people who have their own best interests at heart..! I can appreciate paintings, sculptures and to an extent graffiti but I sometimes wonder if cows suspended in formylamide or buildings draped in cloth is truly 'Art'
I can understand a cat being on board a ship, but a fox? I too would love to know the origins of this, pity we cant see the name of the ship on his hatband
What we see here, will most likely be a picture taken on the HMS Fox, that was launched in 1893 and decomissioned in 1919.
In that case, it would make sence that a fox-head is found aboard a ship. This sailor would then be grooming the ships most important symbol of her name and inspired characteristics.
I noticed something ( "I wish I knew more about this photo and it's origins also" ) yesterday that made me want to explain something about the easiness of modern-day internet after I found and answered at least part of an answer to your question-
Observing and noticing in combination with access to the internet sometimes can give answers.
Try: - Look at picture closely. Notice: - Gunturret - Outfit of central person - Hat of said person - Rim of hat of said person - Alpahabetic characters on rim of hat of said person, being H M S - H M S = His/Her Majesty's Ship - H M S + gunturret = ship & war ship - H M S = Royal (UK-) Navy - Animal person is grooming = Fox - Fox on navy ship = Most likely--- Ship name? -> H M S Fox -> Google Search: HMS Fox - Result as far as the existence of a fitting setting for that picture goes !
That's why I like the internet compared to times before we had internet.

Does the man there dye his beard or is it one of those strap on beards?
