Topless women protesters 'surprised and upset' as men show up with cameras

Dozens of women walked topless through downtown Portland on Saturday in order to bring attention to what they say is a double standard when it comes to the public display of upper torsos.

The event's organizer, Ty MacDowell, says she set up the event (with a police escort) because she could: Maine's nudity laws only apply to exposed genitals. She says she was surprised by the number of men who showed up with cameras. "I'm really upset by the men… all the men that are here, just like watching it like it's a parade."

"We should be able to walk down the street and not have this many men taking pictures of us," a participant shouted.

Some bystanders say they were upset at the spectacle, saying children were present, on a sunny Saturday in the Old Port, a busy time for family outings. The walk went off without any problems. Organizers say they expect to plan similar events in the future.

Come over to some cities in countries in Europe- Nothing special about topless people in general on warm days. Not even for children.
US-people should not be so uptight.

lol, They are arguing a case for women being topless and then don't like the result (having pictures taken by men ), it seems self destructive to there argument. If you don't want men to take pictures of you topless, don't go topless .
Although how things are going at the moment, it wont be long til even owning a camera is made illegal :S

I am all for public nudity (with towels to sit on!).  There should be nothing wrong with the human body being uncovered.  USA's 'uptightness' is sad and I fear it will never change.  How dumb is it that laws prohibit one person's actions because of another person cannot control themselves?
With this thinking you could establish other dumb laws by simply replacing the wording -> The poor (the uptight men or women) have the right to a law that prohibits the rich (the younmger and/or more attractive and/or nudists) from flaunting their inaccessible wealth (flaunting their inaccessible flesh)  as it 'makes the poor (the uptight men and women)' see their own lives (husbands and/or wives and/or selves) as less desirable (and far less interesting).
I recall from 20 years ago, on SoCal's nude beaches you would have idiots on the cliffs with binoculars and large cameras.  I have to wonder if the internet has now destroyed those places.
Thanks to obesity, and ahem, certain drug side effects (of drugs that are supposed to preserve masculinity?), many men have breasts larger than my wife's and they are allowed to swagger their huge bags of flesh most anywhere. - It is a sad double standard.

I doubt they were actually surprised by the men who showed up the take their pictures. The presence of these men, in fact, proves the women's point.

I agree that people should be allowed to wear -- or not wear -- pretty  much whatever they like. But if a cultural shift is going to happen, has to start somewhere -- someone has to be first and endure the consequent gawking and criticism. If it become commonplace enough, I imagine the gawking will subside -- or at least be done more discreetly.

Of course, if it becomes commonplace, people will have to accept the fact that it's not just the pretty, young girls who will decide to go topless.
