Indian lonely-heart tricked into marrying boy

An Indian bachelor was duped into marrying a teenage boy in a matchmaking scam.

Gangaram Tewari turned to a lonely-hearts service to find him a bride in Bahraich, in the country's northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The love-starved electrician took a compatibility test, picked out a pretty young spouse named 'Sunita’ then handed over 30,000 rupees ($637) for the wedding ceremony.

But Tewari's hopes of a match made in heaven ended in farce when he lifted the bride’s veil to kiss her and discovered she was a teenage boy disguised in a wedding dress.

Police arrested the boy and he confessed to having married 18 men in similar fashion. Officers are hunting several more suspects over the alleged scam.

“This is the one case of its kind that I have come across in my entire service to date,” Ram Bharose, the superintendent of police in Bahraich said.
