Drunk driver drives himself to jail

An Amherst man called the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office saying he was driving while drunk and headed to the jail so he could sleep it off, according to the sheriff’s office.

James Hubbell, 64, of Amherst, called the department at 4:43 a.m. on Sunday, stating he was on the way to the sheriff’s office to sleep it off after a night of drinking. A deputy went outside to find a 2002 tan Ford Ranger driving across the lawn of the Lorain County Health Department, next door to the sheriff’s office.

Hubbell “had a strong odour of intoxicants beverage ... and heavy slurred speech.” Hubbell was “unsteady on his feet,” when given a sobriety test. Hubbell, when asked to perform another test, said, “No, am drunk arrest me, am not doing anymore tests.”

Hubbell also refused a breath test and was taken to the Lorain County Jail. He was arrested for driving under the influence and failure to maintain physical control.
