It is thought they went for a drive from a party and drove across the course – before hitting the bunker. Doug Bushby, chairman of Royal North Devon, said ”The greenkeepers saw it, went down there and saw two bodies in the back and rang police.

”A paramedic came too because they wondered if they were injured, but apparently they were just asleep. It was a little more than a ball in the bunker. It is a strange place to drive at night. You can get very disorientated very quickly. Over the years we have had a few small incidents of cars from the burrows, but access is now limited as the gates to the burrows are locked at night.
”There is a certain amount of damage that’s been done to the turf. It will be a considerable cost to repair the damage.” Police confirmed that two people were found asleep in the vehicle. One was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. A 28-year-old man will appear before North Devon Magistrates Court on Friday, September 24.
