Cow and pig among more than 70 animals found in New York house

Suffolk County SPCA officers found scores of dead and dying animals inside a filthy and condemned house in Shirley, N.Y., on Tuesday evening, authorities said. Officers and veterinarians were on the scene examining the animals. They found at least 70 animals alive, including ducks, rabbits, mice, pigeons, chinchillas, dogs, cats, goats, a pig and a cow, authorities said. The animals were malnourished and filthy.

They also found at least a dozen animals dead. SPCA officials said the house was piled high with debris and smelled like urine and feces. They did not find any food inside the house. An elderly disabled woman lived inside the home with all the animals, authorities said. She could face animal cruelty charges.



"This animal hoarding is one of the most egregious Quality of Life Task Force cases we have seen," said Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko. "We will prosecute the code violations issued to the property owner to the fullest extent of the law and the Quality of Life Task Force will continue to aggressively crack down on property owners who disregard the health and safety of Brookhaven residents."

Officers issued eight appearance tickets to the property owner, town officials said. Three of the tickets are for misdemeanor offences. The town has started cleaning up the property and plans to charge the owner for the cost.
