Naked man stole sausage from retirement home

Video has been released of an Estero man who walked around a clubhouse nude and is accused of stealing sausage, napkins and a First-Aid kit. Joshua Ryan Abernathy, 34, of the 20000 block of Holiday Drive, was arrested on Jan. 19 by Lee deputies and charged with burglary and petty theft in connection with the Jan. 7 incident at Mariner’s Cove Club House, 20700 Basin Drive, Estero.

On Jan. 7 Joseph Brown told deputies he went into the club house to supply it with food for an upcoming bingo night. He noticed sausage that had been in the refrigerator missing.

Brown viewed the video surveillance camera footage and saw a man go into the club house through an unlocked sliding glass door. The man searched through several drawers and the refrigerator. It also shows him walking around the club house nude, possibly after showering and he may have used the wash area behind the location.

Brown told deputies it looked like a man who had been around the area previously and told to leave. He also said the man “possibly stays in a wooded area located west of Mariner’s Cove.” The missing items included the $15 in sausage, a $25 first-aid kit and a sock of paper napkins valued at $5. A detective recognized the man as Abernathy.
