Prisoner given four more months in jail for flashing at staff

An inmate who flashed his private parts at prison staff, including the chaplain and a governor, has been given another four months inside. Roy Harris, 47, was found guilty of seven counts of exposure by a jury at Cardiff Crown Court, following a trial heard in his absence after he refused to leave his jail cell.

Not guilty pleas to the charges had been entered on his behalf previously but a jury convicted him unanimously after hearing from staff working at Parc Prison, Bridgend, who had been confronted with the part-naked prisoner as they went about their duties. Senior manager and acting governor, Stephen Morgan said he’d felt threatened and disgusted when Harris, from Gilfach Goch, waved his genitals at him as he made a routine call to his cell.

“I went in, saying ‘Morning Mr Harris, how are you?’ and he turned, dropped his boxer shorts, grabbed his genitals and shook them at me,” he said. “I can’t say I was frightened but I was disgusted and alarmed.” Harris later claimed he had only been trying to draw attention to the lack of medical care he was getting for his eczema.

Prison postal worker Andrea Richards described going to Harris' cell to deliver a registered letter. “Asked to sign for it, he stood up and down came his trousers as he looked right at me.” she said. The four-month term will run concurrently with the sentence he is already serving.
