The 38-year-old, who was wanted for break and enter and bail offences, shut the door on police when they went to arrest him at a Hardy Street unit in Bondi in Sydney's east yesterday evening. Officers forced their way in but could not find him when they searched the unit.

Police said a groaning sound from the rear of the unit block led them to an open window, from where they saw the man wedged between a retaining wall and a neighbouring fence. The man was taken to hospital and remains under police guard.
Several laptops, mobile phones, shotgun cartridges and illicit drugs were found in the unit, along with a police badge and warrant card that had been reported stolen earlier in the year. Investigations are continuing.
