Man rescued from giant frog

A Willimantic man who climbed atop one of the city’s iconic Frog Bridge statues early on Friday caused the bridge to be closed while police removed him from his perch.

Police said Christopher Gallo, 25, of 98 Chapman St., was intoxicated when they arrived at the scene shortly after 1 a.m. Gallo was discovered sitting on one of the frog statue’s legs. The suspect was laughing about his climb up the statue, which is at least 35 feet high, police said.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Frog Bridge, which is also Thread City Crossing, had to be closed for about 30 minutes while Gallo was being removed, police reported.

The Willimantic Fire Department dispatched a ladder truck, which a firefighter and police officer used to get Gallo down from the frog. Gallo was charged with breach of peace and released on $1,500 non-surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in court July 18, police said.
