Intruder knocked out by guitar after trying to break into home

You would think a dog barking in the window would be enough to stop a home intruder, or maybe a National Rifle Association sign on the front door. But for 29-year-old Sean MacSorley, it took an acoustic guitar. MacSorley was walking to the front door of his Manassas home early on Saturday morning when he says he was attacked by a drunk 32-year-old John Mayhew.

"He tried to fight me in the front yard and he tried to push me into the house. So I pushed him out, went inside, and sat down," said MacSorley. But then, MacSorley says Mayhew tried to get in through the back door. That's when MacSorley grabbed his old guitar.

"It was the first thing I picked up because it was right next to my chair," said MacSorley. "I pushed him out the door with it and hit him a few times." MacSorley hit Mayhew so hard it broke his guitar in two. Manassas City Police say the blows knocked Mayhew down a flight of stairs, where he remained unconscious until police showed up about ten minutes later.

Mayhew is now charged with unlawful entry, public intoxication, and assault on a law enforcement officer after he allegedly spit on a Manassas City Police Officer at the hospital. MacSorley is now being hailed a hero, or as his roommate now calls him, a "Guitar Hero."
