Seven-year-old Indian girl weeps stones

The curious case of a seven-year-old girl whose eyes ‘weep’ stones is baffling doctors who are unable to say what causes the phenomenon. The girl, Kura Nitya’s right eye started popping out stones 15 days ago. This abnormal development has shocked her parents.

Nitya, who is a class II student belonging to Cherlaboothkur in Karimnagar, has been weeping about 12 to 25 stones a day. Observing this abnormal development, her parents approached various ophthalmologists in Hyderabad and Karimnagar who are unable to diagnose what is causing this problem. According to her grandfather Gopal Reddy, the stones began popping out from October 26.

“Initially we though it was some divine power and prayed to God for this phenomenon to stop. But, it did not stop even then,” he said. Reddy said that medical tests have been done and the reports were normal. “Initially we were unaware of what the object popping out was since it was smaller in size, but later, we realized they were stones,” he explained.

He said that they were preserving all the stones for medical tests, if required.
According to Nitya, the lower portion of her right eye swells minutes before the stones pop out. “During the popping out or after that, I have no pain,” said Nitya. The seven-year-old also doesn’t seem to understand why she is ‘weeping’ stones. When contacted, ophthalmologist Dr Kalyan Chakaravarthy, one of the doctors who conducted medical tests on Nitya, he said Nitya was medically fit and that he was unaware of what was causing stones pop out of the girl’s eyes.
