Council bans sex in medieval church grounds

Drunken couples have been hit by a landmark injunction – after being caught having sex in a Birmingham graveyard. The city council and West Midlands Police acted after reports of boozed-up men and women cavorting around St Mary’s Church.

They have now issued a Section 222 order which means anyone caught having sex in public could be fast-tracked to jail. Those spotted swigging booze, begging or urinating in the streets will also be hauled before a judge where they could be fined or locked up.

The crackdown on anti-social behaviour comes after reports of street drinkers having sex within the confines of the medieval church, which dates back to 1405, and the local park. Christine Williams, manager of Moseley Park, said: “A week ago, one of the park rangers saw one of the drinkers with a woman. The ranger threw them out.’’ Fed-up Moseley residents had battled with the issue for over 10 years and the order was brought in after the council collected 28 witness statements.

Other complaints included aggression and intimidation from beggars when money was not passed over, drinking and indecent exposure. Councillor James, McKay, cabinet member for Green, Safe and Smart said: “Criminal acts and anti-social behaviour should not have to be tolerated by decent people trying to live their day to day lives in peace. I congratulate the bravery of the local community who felt empowered to make a change and reclaim their neighbourhood.”

They've made it illegal? But it's so romantic, I mean, err, those perverts!

I don't think they needed to ban it. It's already illegal to have sex in a public place. They're just making it easier and cheaper to deal with the problem.
