Wild-eyed driver in high speed chase blames God

A driver claiming that "God took over" is in custody after taking police on a wild chase through Hollywood. The pursuit started in Burbank at around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday when an off-duty police officer saw the man driving recklessly.

The officer called in for backup. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Vardan Aslanyan, refused to pull over. He led officers across several freeways, hitting speeds of 100 miles per hour at times.

Aslanyan stopped at the Burbank off-ramp on the 170 freeway at one point and appeared to be surrendering but then started up again. Traffic on the 101 slowed him down. He slammed into the centre divider and damaged the car's front left wheel but still kept going. Aslanyan exited Highland still pursued by police cruisers.

He crashed into two vehicles along Franklin Avenue near the 101 freeway in Hollywood and spun out of control. He was taken into custody claiming he was an "angel." A child in one of the vehicles involved in the crash was hurt. Her condition is unknown.

There's another news video including a more in-depth interview with Mr Aslanyan here.
