I'd no idea they could do that either. But best not to futz with them too much. If he felt really threatened, his tail would drop off. It could be it's happened before as the tail's much smaller than normal.
True, they do. But they never quite grow back as well as the one before.
My sister had a leopard gecko named chimera. It had a big tail the shape of its own head, so that when in a fight, predators would try to bite the wrong one. (Chimera was the mythological beast with two heads).
I worked for a truly awful company.. If my arse dropped off every time I was stressed the country would be littered with them.

Yes, I'd noticed his tail wasn't all it should be.
But I really didn't know they could make noises like that.
Geckos tails fall off to distract predators and give them time to escape.
It's my understanding that many lizards can detach their tails as a distraction to predators...

not angry, but likely scared. Leave the poor thing alone.
