Council installs massive air freshner to make landfill dump smell nicer

A council have installed a giant air freshener in a bid to make a town smell nicer. The huge sprayer was introduced in Galashiels in the Borders to tackle the “appalling stench” coming from a landfill site.

Scottish Borders Council and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency have launched a probe into complaints about the smells produced at the Easter Langlee dump. Community councillor Tom Douglas said: “I’m sure if my septic tank smelled like that, SEPA would be on to me.”

One resident added: “One of the local businesses told me tourists are giving the town the go-by because the place smells so bad.” The council are working with SEPA on an action plan to sort the problems.

A spokesman said: “We have hired an odour control unit which sprays a fine mist of odour neutralising agent into the air. Its performance will be monitored over the coming days and weeks.”
